Essay on King Arthur Distinguishing Fact from Fiction

In today’s day and age, stories are traded all the time, and many times it can be hard to distinguish fact from fiction. However, when a story, approximately 1500 years old has been told and retold, and modified over and over again, the truth, if there is any, can be quite hard to find! This paper will take a look at both the fact and the fiction surrounding who King Arthur was, what he did, and the historical basis for the king. Before exploring the historical truths, it is important that some of the well-known tales, myths and legends are brought into the light. Many stories revolve around themes such as young Arthur pulling the sword out of the stone, the epic love/hate relationship between the wizards Merlin and Morgana, and the†¦show more content†¦Two other characters, Merlin and Morgana, are often brought up when tales of King Arthur are being told. It was said that the wizard Merlin aided King Arthur in his reign as a young king of England; acting as a guardia n and also a consultant. The rumors surrounding Morgana are many, but we can find some common themes which do not fail to illustrate her character. First of all, Morgana was one of Arthur’s half-sisters, but hated him with a passion. There are numerous accounts of how she repeatedly tried to bring Arthur down and claim the power for herself. She was a fairy queen, a sorceress, and also a disciple of Merlin, which is where she learned about magic. There have also been rumors about a romantic relationship between the two, but there is no official account. The first mention of Merlin appears in Historia Regum Britanniae written by Geoffrey of Monmouth around the year 1136. Morgana’s first mention is in Vita Merlini, written by the same author, just 14 years later. These texts, however were written almost 600 years after the characters are said to have existed, so their legitimacy is questionable. Possibly the most cherished tales, however, come from the legends of the gallant Knights of the Round Table. Folklore proclaims that once Arthur had become a man and fully established his kingdom in Camelot, he hand-picked the 12 most brave, loyal and skilled knights in England. These 13 mighty men formed a council, but unlikeShow MoreRelatedCorporate Social Responsibility10163 Words   |  41 Pagespurpose, principle and consequence are integral components of business social performance; itemizing these contributions finds one incorporating the interests of ethics and morality within the corporate structure, essential concepts that ar e often absent from a managerial standpoint. When the triceps brachii muscle contracts, it produces extension of the arm. ) Why is the inferior region of the shoulder joint most vulnerable to dislocation? It is most vulnerable to dislocation because it is the most mobile synovial joint. Because of this it is frail and relies only on the surrounding ligaments, muscles, and tendons for stability. 4) A high school student comes to the emergency room complaining of persistent pain and stiffness in her shoulder joint. In talking with her, you discover that she has been spending many hours trying to improve her pitching skills for her school’s softball team. What is likely causing the pain? A shoulder subluxation is most likely causing her pain. This is a partial dislocation of the shoulder and is caused by her overusing her shoulder. This may cause a loose shoulder where her shoulder capsule will be stretched out as well as the ligaments. This could further lead to chronic shoulder instability. 5) Mary wants to enter a weight-lifting competition and consults you as to what type of muscle fibers she needs to develop and how she should go about it. What would you suggest to her?Mary needs to develop her fast muscle fibers. In order to do this, she will need to have frequent, brief and intensive workouts. She also needs to create muscle hypertrophy which will create an enlargement of the stimulated muscle. She can gain this by repeated and exhaustive stimulation which will create more mitochondria. With repeatedly stimulated muscles she can create near-maximal tension. 6) Describe the basic sequence of events that occurs at the neuromuscular junction and in the muscle cell. The first step is the arrival of an action potential at the synaptic terminal, next is the release of acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft, then Ach binds at the motor end plate and causes sodium-ion to rush into sarcoplasm which is then quickly broken down by AChE. The last step is it returns to initial state which occurs if another action potential arrives at the NMJ. 7) Many visceral smooth muscle cells lack motor neuron innervation. How are their contractions coordinated and controlled? Visceral smooth muscle cell’s contractions are coordinated by rhythmic cycles of activity that are controlled by pacesetter cells. ) A hypothetical genetic disease causes the body to produce antibodies that compete with acetylcholine for receptors on the motor end plate. Patients with this disease exhibit varying degrees of muscle weakness and flaccid paralysis in the affected muscles. If you could administer a drug that inhibits acetylcholinesterase or a drug that blocks acetylcholine, which one would you use to alleviate these symptoms? I would use a drug that inhibits acetylcholinesterase so that acetylcholine is not blocked. If the disease is producing antibodies that compete with acetylcholine than we would not want a drug that blocks it, we would want to inhibit it to activate the muscles. 9) Thirty minutes after Mary has completed a 25-km race, she begins to notice severe muscle soreness and stiffness in her legs. Her urine is dark colored. She wonders whether she may have damaged her muscles during the race. She visits the ER, and the doctor orders several blood tests. Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield Essay Example For Students

Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield Essay In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield views the world as an evil and corrupt place where there is no peace. His anger turned to relentlessly unforgiving social scorn. (Coles)This perception of the world does not change significantly through the novel. However as the novel progresses, Holden gradually comes to the realization that he is powerless to change this. Holden Caulfield had much going for hima comfortable suburban life and a privileged educational background in a private school. (Coles) During the short period of Holdens life covered in this book. Shortly after Holden leaves Pencey Prep, he checks in to the Edmont Hotel. This is what Holden Caulfield would call the phony world. (French) Holden spends the following evening in the hotel which was full of perverts and morons. There were screwballs all over the place.(Salinger 61) His situation only deteriorates from this point on as the more he looks around this world, the more depressing life seems. Around every corner Holden sees corruption. He looks out on a world which appears completely immoral and unscrupulous. In those three days the novel places a distressed Holden in the vicinity of Manhattan. The city is decked with decorations and holiday splendor, yet, much to Holdens despair seldom yields any occasions of peace, charity or even genuine merriment. Holden is surrounded by what he views as drunks, perverts, morons and screwballs. These convictions which Holden holds waver very momentarily during only one particular scene in the book. The scene is that with Mr. Antolini. After Mr. Antolini patted Holden on the head while he was sleeping, Holden jumped up and ran out thinking that Mr. Antolini was a pervert as well. This is the only time during the novel where Holden thinks twice about considering someone as a pervert. After reviewing Mr. Antolini, Holden finally concludes that maybe he wasnt making a flitty pass at him. Maybe he just like patting guys heads as they sleep . This is really the only time in the novel where Holden actually considers a positive side. But this was a major let down for him. Mr. Antolini was what Holden had thought of as a father type figure but it turns out Mr. Antolini ruined the sense of trust between them. This event does not constitute a significant change. As Holden himself says, Its not too bad when the suns out, but the sun only comes out when it feels like coming out.(Salinger 134) The sun of course is a reference to decency through the common association of light and goodness. His perception of the world remains the same. The one conviction that does change during the novel is Holdens belief that he can change the world. On his date with Sally, Holden reveals his feelings. Did you ever get fed up? I mean did you ever get scared that everything was going to go lousy unless you did something(Salinger 130) Holden goes through several plans. Holden at one point contemplates heading out west where he will pretend to be a deaf-mute and live a quiet life. At another point Holden proposes to Sally to escape this world with him. It is finally to his younger sister Phoebe that Holden reveals his ultimate plan. Although Holden describes the situation in a very picturesque and symbolic manner he essentially tells Phoebe that he wants to prevent children from growing up. He blames the worlds corruption on adults and believes that when he stops the children from growing up he will preserve their innocence and save the world. It takes most of the book before Holden begins to realize that he is helpless to stop this corruption. Finally, he realizes that not only is there nothing that he can do, but there is nowhere he can go to hide from it. Holden takes awhile to comprehend these concepts. One good example is when Holden is delivering the note to his sister. .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca , .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .postImageUrl , .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca , .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca:hover , .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca:visited , .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca:active { border:0!important; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca:active , .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ueb588315d5c37bcb7f7771d53297a7ca:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Social Media and Law Enforcement Sample EssayHe encounters a fuck-you (Salinger 202) written on the wall. Holden careful rubs this off with his hand so as to protect the innocent children from reading it. Later on he finds fuck-you (Salinger 202) scratched into the surface with a knife. He discovers that he cant efface this one. Even in the timeless peace of the Egyptian tomb room at the museum there is an unerasable fuck-you (Salinger 204). This incident is the beginning of Holdens realization that his dreams are infeasible. Ironically enough, it is one of the innocent children that he is trying to protect who helps him come to terms with this realization. It is Phoebe wh o challenges his plan to escape out west. As he is telling Phoebe that she can not run away, he discovers that he too can not run away. The final break-down comes near the end of the book when he is watching Phoebe on the carousel. All the kids kept trying to grab for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid shed fall off the goddam horse, but I didnt say anything or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but its bad if you say anything to them (Salinger 211). In the above passage from the novel, Holden hits the final breakdown. Being the catcher becomes obviously unrealistic. The gold rings are ironically not gold but really brass-plated iron. The gold rings are symbols of the corrupted world which always wears a shiny surface to hide its evil. It is at this point that Holden sees that he can not stop children from growing up and therefore losing their innocence. They will fall if they fall, there is nothing that can be done. Wiser and sadder, Holden decides that he must return home rather than taking the responsibility of leading Phoebe astray (French). Shortly after this point Holden has his nervous breakdown. His breakdown is due to this depressing realization that the world is corrupt and filled with evil. He knows now with a sickening certainty that he is powerless to stop both evil and maturation. As a matter of fact, it is bad to do so. Works CitedColes, Robert. Secular Days, Sacred Moments. America, Vol. 181, Issue 3, pp.8. French, Warren, J.D.
